COMPLETION OF M1 SURVEY
1ST HORIZON are delighted to announce the completion of the company’s most extensive and complex survey to date.
A busy stretch of the M1 Motorway that runs through the heart of rural Northamptonshire from Junction 16 ending in Bedfordshire at Junction 13, is earmarked for the upgrade to an all-lane-running Smart Motorway next year. The scheme, which is programmed over three years & costing £349 million, is in the latter stages of the design process with construction expected to start in March 2018.
In an attempt to revolutionise and aid the construction, design and management of the ever-increasing Smart Motorway Network, the expertise and knowledge of 1ST HORIZON was called upon to survey almost 40 kilometres of live, running motorway.
With a multi-disciplined work force and decades of combined experience behind them, 1ST HORIZON’s team of utility operatives, topographical surveyors and laser scanning technicians began capturing every feature above and below ground on this busy stretch of Motorway. Working challenging night shifts in a dynamic, high-risk environment, our skilled teams aimed to cover 1km of road each night, scanning every bridge, lifting every manhole cover in the process, to capture every piece of geospatial information possible.
At the end of a busy shift, the data captured in the field that night was sent back to the 1ST HORIZON’s bespoke survey headquarters ready for the new day, where a team of CAD technicians and BIM experts processed the captured data.
With deliverables in multiple formats, 1ST HORIZON were able to provide clients, Costain Galliford Try JV, with a comprehensive 3D survey encompassing underground cable routes, drainage routes, above ground structures and surface features. It is hoped that by providing the clients’ design teams with as much useful information as possible, the end result is a process which maximises efficiency, minimises risk and shapes the way in which the ever increasing Smart Motorway Network is planned and built in the future.
