Transforming the University of Birmingham Campus with Geometric and BIM Modelling Services

The University of Birmingham is embarking on an ambitious journey to revitalise its campus with the latest development delivering an exciting chapter in this transformation.

Its vast estate of roughly 300 buildings across the UK and some satellite campuses overseas consist of Grade I listed buildings that are over 100 years old to brand new state of the art facilities for Teaching and research.

A key element to the latest building transformations is to accurately record and capture all of these buildings in BIM as this is of strategic importance to the operation of the Estates which in turn supports the wider world class University activity.

Because of this the Build Higher Framework was established and developed to allow the University to build longer-term relationships with key contractors and consultants that provide construction, design, and surveying services.

This Framework is available for use by Higher Education and Foundation Education institutions to utilise approved suppliers for key build project work of which they awarded 1st Horizon with an 8-year Framework to provide Geometric and BIM (Building Information Modelling) modelling services.

This partnership marks a significant milestone as the University strives to deliver Campus-wide BIM, pioneering digital twin and smart campus initiatives.

As the preferred supplier for BIM modelling services, we are excited and honoured to bring our expertise to this framework. By harnessing cutting-edge technologies and industry best practices, we will deliver tailored solutions that meet the unique needs of each project. From concept to completion, we will collaborate closely with the project leads to ensure alignment with project goals and objectives.

The expertise and insights provided by the 1st Horizon team will be instrumental in shaping the future of campus infrastructure and operations. By leveraging BIM data and technology, the University can optimise space utilisation, enhance maintenance and facilities management, and create immersive learning environments for students.

At the heart of this partnership lies a commitment to sustainability and social responsibility. By adopting BIM and digital twin technologies, the University can minimise environmental impact, reduce resource consumption, and create healthier, more resilient campus environments. This holistic approach aligns with both organisations’ values and contributes to a brighter, more sustainable future for generations to come.
